Time to Take a Hike

img_20181006_083427

The weather has finally broken its rain cycle and the skies are blue and clear. Its time to take a hike and recharge. The streams and waterfalls are at thier peak flows. So in the early hours of the morning I will be headed up into the mountians to get some sunrise shots and then off for some mountains streams and fields on the way back. Hoping for some wildlife along the way. The birds have returned and I gotten some glimpses of foxes and hearing reports of black bears. Maybe, just maybe I’ll get lucky if I am patience enough.

A day at the Zoo can be inspiring

When its been a long winter and the few times that were free to go out and shoot, the weather was not camera friendly, a IMGP8387day at the zoo can create a spark that starts the photography fire again. And while the photos may not be those fine artworks you want to capture, it gets your skills working again and shows you what you need to work on. Or like in my case I purchased a new camera during the winter and am in theIMGP8336 process of learning all the new features and controls.Try to see differently, and try new things, and look at other photographers work for ideas. YouTube can be your friend as well. See if a photographer who’s style you like has a channel and watch. Join a site or Facebook page where your photos can be critiqued. I’m a fan of Thomas Hawk and Trey Ratcliff as I like Trey’s HDR style and Thomas’ eye on the world, I swear the man can find a photo not matter where he is. So let Spring be more then just flowers blooming, let it spur you onto a new chapter in your photographic approach and skills.

Second Factor Authentication and You

You have likely heard this term, but do you understand how it could protect you? the quick answer is that even if your password is stolen, second factor is a wall between the hacker and your account. the most common use if second factor is having a text message sent to your phone. This is good long as no one had hacked your phone or its account. The next secure second factor is using an Authentication application on your computer or phone to show you a 6 digit pin to enter to get access to your account. the third and most secure is a hardware token and an associated password or fingerprint. This link is to the Freedom of the Press blog and explains this in more details. https://freedom.press/training/email-security-tips/  I use the Yubikey token and its associated Authentication app on my phone to secure my logins along with LastPass password manager to keep everything nice and secure. LastPass keeps my password secure by encrypting them and requires a master password AND use of my Yubikey to get access to my passwords. If I were to forget my master password I would need to have access to my emergency pins that I printed out and locked away with no identification as to what they are for in a lockbox. Yubikey wrote I great blog on how to make yourself as secure as possible here: https://www.yubico.com/2017/05/ten-ways-protect-your-identity-online/

Authenticators like Google Authenticator can be found in the Google PlayStore or Apple App Store depending on your device. Yubikey and Lastpass are multi-platform and can sync across Device types to keep you up to date.

Once you have read it over, if you need help setting up second factor give me a call and I’ll work with you to get you setup and as secure as possible

Storm Coming Again, How Safe is Your Data?

If you live in the North East you know what it’s been like the last few days. Downed power lines leading to power outages and power surges. And of those that have power, many do not have internet back yet. I am getting a lot of questions about computers that are not booting up, Hard drives that randomly lost files, or modems/routers that do not power up. Is your backup onsite and is easily a grab and go? Or Have you moved to an online backup? Have you put UPS (battery backup) units into place give you time to properly shutdown, or just get through the brown outs? If you haven’t give me a call and I’ll work with you to design a solution to keep you and your data safe.
